An original work created in 2021 by Ryosuke Cohen, the pioneering figure of mail art in Japan.
Since the 1980s, Cohen has worked alongside Shozo Shimamoto — a founding member of the Gutai Art Association — to advance the practice of mail art. His international influence, sustained through decades of global exchange, is without parallel in the field.
The depth of his humanitarian and artistic contribution is underscored by a singular distinction: Bern Porter — physicist, peace activist, and former member of the Nobel Prize selection committee — formally nominated Cohen for the Nobel Peace Prize.
BRAIN CELL is Cohen's defining series: each work assembles fragments contributed by artists worldwide into a dense, layered composition. Historically, these prints circulated exclusively as gifts among participating artists and were never offered for commercial sale.
This work represents the world's first official sale of a BRAIN CELL print — made possible through the direct collaboration of the artist.
Each edition is limited to fifty impressions, the majority distributed directly to artists across the globe. Availability on the open market is correspondingly rare. This is an opportunity to acquire a work from one of contemporary art's most enduring and internationally networked practices.
