During the Edo period, old Tokyo was home to districts where prostitution was the main source of income. For centuries, courtesans from poor families had to engage in these practices to survive and regain their freedom; this vast spider web-like network originated in what was the most renowned pleasure district of the time: 'Yoshiwara'.
