■ Curator's Note
The domestic and the dutiful — learning, labour, household routine — are reconstructed through vintage cut-outs: textbook fragments, old diagrams, the visual grammar of the schoolroom. A quiet nostalgia for the homework era collides with a sardonic eye trained on the tasks that structure adult life.
■ About the Artist
Matthew Rose was born in New York in 1959. He studied semiotics and linguistics at Brown University, graduating in 1981, and moved to Paris in 1992, where he has worked ever since.
His materials are sourced from Paris flea markets: vintage maps, textbooks, and musical scores. From these found objects he has developed a distinctive collage practice that disassembles and reconstructs the systems of sign and meaning embedded in everyday life.
"A Book About Death," the project Rose initiated in 2009, has been exhibited in more than thirty cities worldwide. It is held in the permanent collections of MoMA (The Museum of Modern Art, New York) and LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art).
Rose has contributed to The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. In 2019, a solo exhibition — "Weekend Plans" — was presented at the Karuizawa New Art Museum, organised by Whitestone Gallery.
ART & DAY is an authorised retailer with a direct agreement with the artist.
