A new collection of original collages by Matthew Rose has arrived at ART & DAY — works made in Paris in 2025 and shipped directly from the artist's studio.
About Matthew Rose
Matthew Rose was born in New York in 1959 and has lived and worked in Paris for over three decades. He studied semiotics at Brown University — a background that runs through everything he makes: his collages are not simply aesthetic arrangements but constructions of meaning, where the collision of images and text from different eras and contexts generates new readings.
His raw material comes from Parisian flea markets: vintage maps, sheet music, illustrated textbooks, scientific diagrams, printed ephemera spanning a century or more of printing history. The age of the materials is part of the work — not as nostalgia, but as a way of layering time into the image.
Institutional Recognition
Rose's projects and works are archived in the permanent collections of MoMA (Museum of Modern Art, New York) and LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art). In 2019, he held a major solo exhibition, Weekend Plans, at Karuizawa New Art Museum in Japan — a show that connected his practice to Japanese collector audiences for the first time at scale.
The 2025 Collection: "Tokyo"
The centrepiece of this collection is Tokyo — a work that takes the city's energy as its visual and conceptual subject. Rose, who has developed a significant following among Japanese collectors, brings the accumulated impressions of his Tokyo visits into a composition of red, black, and archival paper, dense with references that resolve into a surprisingly unified image.
Other works in the 2025 collection continue the themes he's developed over decades: the relationship between word and image, the persistence of printed matter, the way a found photograph or map fragment carries history that can be activated by context.
