LineageSon of Toshimitsu Imai (Art Informel)

Alexandre Imai was born in Paris in 1959. His father, Toshimitsu Imai, was a leading figure in the Art Informel movement and the painter who brought its spirit to postwar Japan. Growing up between Paris and Japan, Alexandre absorbed two cultures and two languages — a duality that continues to shape his practice.

In the 1980s he travelled to England to study under the photographer David Bailey, broadening his visual language beyond painting. On returning to Japan he developed a multi-faceted practice centred on abstract expression: thick impasto, splash techniques and live painting, each exploring the relationship between body, gesture, paint and time.

His output exceeds 100,000 works — a testament to the relentless creative energy and free spirit that have made him a singular presence in the Japanese and international art scenes.
